How to take screenshots in Windows 10?

Are you running a Windows Desktop or Laptop? Do you need to take screenshots often? Then you are at right place. In this guide, I would discuss easy ways of taking perfect screenshots on Windows Desktops and Windows Laptops.

When screenshots are useful?

  1. You need help from someone regarding some error on your PC.
  2. Want to share something interesting on your system with your friends or family.
  3. Proof of something (e.g. screenshot from social media post).
  4. Want to save a copy of the important form which you just submitted on some website.
  5. Capture screenshot from the game. ( and later brag about it on social media 😉 )

We will walk you through simple tips and techniques to take screenshots of full screen, a window or a particular section of your screen. You can also jump to specific parts of article straight away.

How to take screenshots in Windows Desktop?

Before we go into more details, you need to know about Print Screen Button of your Keyboard.

For Full Screen screenshot on Desktop

  1. Press “Windows” + “Print Screen” keys.
  2. The screen will get dim for a moment, indicating that the screenshot has been taken.

How to find the screenshot image?

  1. Press “Windows” + “E” key from your keyboard or Open “This PC”.
  2. Click on Pictures Folder.
  3. Click on Screenshots folder.
  4. All your screenshots will be present inside this folder.

For a screenshot of Window on Desktop?

1. Press “Windows” + “Alt” + “Print Screen” keys.

2. The screenshot of the active window will be copied into clipboard automatically.

3. Open Image Processing Software like MS-Paint. You can also paste it directly into Gmail.

4. Paste the image using Ctrl +V keys. You will now see the screenshot on Paint.

5. Save this image using File>Save As option in the desired location.

For a screenshot of Part of Screen on Desktop (Windows 10 only)

  1. Press “Windows” + “Shift” + “S” keys.
  2. Click and drag the portion which you want to capture in a screenshot.
  3. Open Image editing software like MS-Paint.
  4. Paste the screenshot using Edit > Paste or Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+V.
  5. Save this image using File > Save or Ctrl + S keys. Choose the desired output folder. You’re done 🙂

How to take screenshots in Windows 10 Laptop?

Since laptops and desktops have a difference in Layout of keyboards, so shortcuts also differ.

Steps to capture Full Screen screenshot on Laptop

  1. Press “Fn”+ “Windows” + “Print Screen” keys. (“Fn” is Function key, check your laptop manual for more help)
  2. The screen will get dim for a moment, indicating that the screenshot has been taken.
  3. The newly screenshot is saved in My Pictures > Screenshots folder.

Steps to capture screenshot of Window on Laptop

  1. Press “Alt” + “Print Screen” keys.
  2. The screenshot of the active window will be copied into clipboard automatically.
  3. Open Image Processing Software like MS-Paint, Photoshop, Gimp or even Image friendly website like Gmail (which allows drag and drop for images).
  4. Paste the image using Ctrl +V keys. You will now see the screenshot on Paint.
  5. Save this image in the folder you want.

Steps to capture Part of Screen on Laptop (Windows 10 only)

  1. Press “Windows” + “Shift” + “S” key combination.
  2. Click and drag the portion which you want to capture in a screenshot. This gesture will determine which part of the screen will be captured for the screenshot.
  3. Open Image editing software like MS-Paint. (It also works for image friendly websites like Gmail)
  4. Paste the screenshot using Edit > Paste or Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+V.
  5. Save this image using File > Save or Ctrl + S keys. You will be asked about the output location. Choose the folder and press Enter.

Take Screenshot in Windows using Snipping Tool

Did you got confused with different keyboard shortcuts? Here is a way which is independent of your keyboard, laptop or desktop. It works for all Windows 10 systems.

For Full Screen screenshot

1. Open Snipping Tool from search.

2. Click on arrow besides New.

3. Select Full Screen Snip. That’s all.

Super simple. Isn’t it?

For a screenshot of Window

1. Open Snipping Tool.

2. Click on Arrow besides New.

3. Select Window Snip.

4. Select the window which you want to capture. Done.

For a screenshot of Part of Screen

1. Open Snipping Tool.

2. Click on Arrow besides new and select Rectangular Snip.

3. Now screen will fade slightly and cursor would be changed.

4. Click and Drag to select the part of screen which you want to capture.

5. That’s all, save this snip using Ctrl + S.

Besides this, you can also take free form snip using Snipping Tool. You can also set the snip border as per your preference. By default border is red, you can change it using Tools tab > select Options Button > uncheck Show selection ink after snips are captured option.

You can also annotate the captured image using a pen tool with different ink colors. Erase option works just like MS-Paint.

Taking a series of screenshots using Steps Recorder

This is not very famous tool to capture series of screens on a Windows platform. It can capture screenshots on each user action.

Steps Recorder can be very helpful when you need tech support.

1. Go to Search and type “Steps Recorder“. Open it.

(Alternatively, go to Run, type PSR.exe and press enter.

2. Tap on “Start Record” at the top of the toolbar ( this will turn up “Steps Recorder” that will record next 25 screen changes)

3. The number of screen changes recording can be changed by tapping on Settings > change the number of the screen.

4. The “Step Recorder” will take the screenshot of every screen change.

5. Tapping on “Stop Record” ( on the top of the toolbar) will stop the recording of the screen.

6. After that, it will open a result window.

7. By scrolling down the window you will see all the screenshots that you captured.

8. Now save all your screenshots in the ZIP folder by tapping on the “Save” button on the top of the window.

9. Type the name of the file and also check the location where you want to save your file.

10. This will save all the screenshots in one HTML file.

11. Open this HTML file in any browser in order to view the file. Or save images separately.
